The 12th annual Asian Fest was held on Sunday, June 23rd at the Indiana State Museum. With a record-breaking attendance of nearly 5,000, the festival featured South Korea as the main theme country with a large special exhibit booth to showcase the people and culture of South Korea.

The Asian Fest is hosted every June by Asian American Alliance, Inc (Young-Hee Yedinak is Asian Fest Chair and Past President) to bring together several local Asian communities to celebrate the rich diversity of Asian culture and to demonstrate to fellow Hoosiers how Asian Americans in Central are contributing to make Indiana a better place in which to live. Several local TV stations and media outlets provided great pre-event coverage to raise awareness, while area business and community leaders were there to acknowledge Asian communities and provide networking opportunities. The Korean American Association of Indiana (President Haesoo Woo, Board President BongJae Sung), its entire officers and board of directors, participated in the Korean cultural booth, which showcased colorful and interesting displays and activities to the delight of festival attendees. As you entered the exhibit area, you could see (and play with) Korean drums, gayageum, cymbals and other traditional musical instruments. Then you were greeted by women dressed in beautiful Korean Hanbok to help you experience dressing up in the traditional Hanbok and taking photos with the Kyongbok Palace as a backdrop in the photo zone. Everyone admired the beauty and grace of the Korean Hanbok worn by the KAAI members and families. At the next booth, people stood in a long line to have their names written on rice paper in Korean calligraphy, as well as calligraphy of bamboo drawing on traditional fans. Also, there was also a booth where people can experience traditional acupuncture. While festival attendees learned about the fascinating traditional Korean culture, they also learned about modern Korea on three TV screens. One TV screen showed Korea’s technology and its internet network, the fastest in the world, the modern subway system, and a comparison of Indiana and S. Korea. On another screen, it was all about Korean food, and on the third, K-Pop. It was amazing to see how popular K-Pop was with young festival attendees.

As they watched the music videos of BTS and other Korean artists on TV, they started to dance and sing, and pretty soon, other young people joined in. Meanwhile in the Auditorium and in Great Hall, there was non-stop entertainment, from the traditional Chinese music and dance to Bollywood dance, to Philippine, Burmese, Japanese performances and much more. The special Korean production consisted of three K-Pop performances, a Taekwondo demonstration and a Korean Hanbok fashion show.

Much to our amazement, the K-Pop dance teams were all Americans. 15-year-old Alex from Fort Wayne, IN, captured the audience’s attention with her powerful performance. Another dancer, Nayomi, had visited S. Korea twice and showed her detailed moves to BTS’s song. IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis) dance team, Xiphos Corps, performed two dances and entertained the crowd. It was standing-room only in the auditorium and the appreciative audience cheered throughout the K-Pop performances. When they did an encore performance in the Great Hall, festival goers joined in and danced with them. After K-Pop, the Indiana Taekwondo Academy (Master James Crays) took the stage for Taekwondo demonstrations. ITA is located in Noblesville, IN and has been teaching Taekwondo for more than 40 years. https://indianataekwondoacademy.com The finale of the Korean performance was a Hanbok fashion show. While BTS’s ‘Arirang’ song played, the KAAI volunteers walked on stage to show off their Hanbok…and Rae Basbagill’s darling one-year-old daughter stole the show. From 12 to 5 pm, festival attendees enjoyed Asian food on the Canal Terrace outside, and enjoyed Asian communities’ cultural booths and a myriad of performances inside the State Museum. In addition, Asian American Alliance, Inc honored outstanding Asian American high school students with the Youth Leadership Awards. The students were recognized for their academic excellence and leadership in community service. According to the festival organizers, the 12th annual Asian Fest was the best attended festival to date. This was the first festival event that KAAI participated since its inception and it proved to be a great experience. It also demonstrated how the public has a keen interest in Korean culture and traditions. Later this year, the International Festival will be another opportunity to showcase Korea to the people of Indiana. The Asian Fest was a wonderful experience to build upon and we hope there will be greater interest and participation from the Korean community.

지난 6월 23일 일요일 인디애나폴리스 스테이트 뮤지움에서 제 12회 아시안 페스트가 열렸다. 예년보다 더 많은 관람객들이 참여한 (약 5천 여명의 관람객) 올해의 행사는 대한민국이 메인 국가로 선정되어 행사장의 한면을 모두 한국의 문화 전시장으로 꾸며 더욱 의미가 깊었다.

아시안 페스트 (Asian Fest)는 Asian American Alliance (회장 영희 Yedinak)에서 매년 6월 주최하는 행사로 인디애나폴리스의 여러 나라를 한자리에 모아 인디애나의 아시안 어메리칸들이 얼마나 중부 인디애나의 발전에 얼마나 큰 공헌을 하고 있는 지 주목받을 수 있도록 하는 뜻 깊은 행사이기도 하다. 행사 전 후에 TV방송국을 비롯한 여러 매체에 소개 되며 인지도를 높여가고 있을 뿐만 아니라 지역 대기업들과 여러 리더들이 참여하며 연계하여 네트워크를 형성 하는 좋은 기회이기도 하다. 올해 대한민국의 문화 부스는 인디애나 한인회 (회장 우해수, 이사장 성봉제) 임원진, 이사진이 모두 참여하여 우리 문화를 선보이는 다채롭고 흥미로운 전시품과 엑티비티를 준비하여 방문한 관람객들과 주최측으로 부터 갈채를 받았다. 행사장에 들어서면 장구와 징, 가야금, 꽹가리, 등 전통악기가 관람객들을 맞이하고 이를 지나면 아름다운 한복을 입은 한국 여인들이 한복체험을 하기위해 줄을 서서 기다리는 사람들이 한복을 착용할 수 있게 도와 주었다. 한복을 입은 외국인들은 바로 옆에 설치한 경복궁 비밀 정원을 배경으로 만든 포토존에서 사진 촬영을 하였다. 이날 한인회 임원들이 행사진행을 하며 착용한 한복들을 본 모든 사람들이 입을 모아 한복의 아름다움에 찬사를 보냈다. 바로 옆 부스에서는 준비한 화선지에 외국인들의 이름을 한글로 붓글씨를 써주고 체험도 하며 또한 부채에 대나무 그림을 그려 주는 순서가 있었는데 이 부스도 방문객들이 줄을 서서 기다릴 정도로 많은 관심을 보였다. 이렇게 전통적인 우리 문화를 보여줌과 동시에 TV스크린에서는 세계에서 가장 빠른 인터넷 네트워크를 자랑하는 한국의 기술과 지하철 여행, 인디애나와 한국을 비교하는 영상을 상영하였고 다른 TV 스크린에서는 한류, K-Pop 음악을 상영하였는데 외국인들의 K-Pop에 대한 관심은 우리가 아는 것보다 훨씬, 상상을 초월하는 높은 관심을 볼 수 있었다. 영상 앞에서 BTS를 비롯한 한국 아티스트들의 뮤직 비디오를 관람하던 많은 젊은이들이 하나 둘 춤을 따라하더니 이내 이곳에 모인 많은 사람들이 너나 할 것없이 군무를 하듯이 음악에 맞춰 춤을 추기 시작하였다. 어떤 외국인은 노래를 따라 부르기도 하였다.

이날 Auditorium과 Great Hall 에서는 여러 나라에서 준비한 퍼포먼스가 끊이지 않고 진행되었는데 대한민국은 3팀의 K-Pop댄스 팀들과 태권도 시범, 그리고 한복 패션쇼를 준비하였다. 놀랍게도 K-Pop 댄스 팀, 3팀 모두 외국인들이었다. 멀리 포트웨인, 인디애나에서 와준 15세 소녀 Alex는 파워풀한 무대로 관객들의 시선을 사로 잡았고 BTS의 노래에 맞춰 디테일한 동작들을 소화한 Nayomi는 한국을 이미 두번이나 방문한 한국통이었다. 인디애나폴리스 내에 자리하고 있는 IUPUI(Indiana University Purdue University in Indianapolis)의 댄스 팀 Xiphos Corps (pronounced zi-fos core)도 멋진 군무로 2곡을 화려하게 장식하였다. 실내 공연장에서 펼쳐진 이 멋진 K-Pop Dance 공연은 가득 메운 관람객들로 좌석이 모자라 많은 사람들이 서서 관람하며 환호성을 지르는 진풍경을 연출하기도 하였다. 이날 공연을 펼친 팀들이 Great Hall에서 엥콜공연을 펼쳤는데 순서 중간 중간에 다른 관객들이 합류하여 함께 춤을 추기도 하였다. K-Pop공연에 이어 인디애나 태권도 아카데미 (Master James Crays)에서 멋진 태권도 시범을 보여주었는 ITA(Indiana Taekwondo Academy)는 인디애나폴리스 북부 Noblesville 지역에서 40년이 넘게 태권도를 가르치고 있는 역사있는 태권도장이다. https://indianataekwondoacademy.com 대한민국 공연의 마지막 피날레는 BTS의 아리랑을 배경음악으로 하여 이날 한복을 입고 자원봉사해준 모든 한인회 임원들이 패션쇼를 선보이며 모든 순서를 마무리하였는데 나래씨는 깜찍한 한살배기 딸과 함께 스테이지를 활보하여 많은이들의 탄성을 자아냈다. 페스티벌 중에 또다른 뜻 깊은 순서가 있었는데 중부 인디애나의 학생들 중에 성적이 우수하거나 커뮤니티에서 리더쉽을 인정받은 아시안 학생들을 선정하여 시상하였다. 지역 식당에서 설치한 야외 간이 식당에서는 맛있는 아시안 음식을 선보였고 세계 각국에서 준비한 문화전시 부스들, 다채로운 공연들, 뜻 깊은 시상식, 오후 12시부터 5시간 동안 알차게 진행된 올해의 Asian Fest는 지난 12년 간 열린 페스티벌 중 단연 최고의 행사였다는 후문이다. 인디애나 한인회가 재발족된 이후 처음 참가한 인터네셔널 행사에서 대한민국의 아름다운 문화와 전통을 유감없이 선보였다. 한국 전시, 행사장을 방문한 관람객들을 방문한 외국인들의 한국과 한국문화, 음악에 대한 관심은 우리가 생각하는 것보다 훨씬 높다는 것을 다시 한번 느꼈다. 추후에 펼쳐질 다른 인터네셔널 행사에서는 이번 행사에서 경험한 보완해야 할점들을 수정하고, 또한 더 많은 한인들이 참여하고 관심을 보여 7백만 인디애나 사람들에게 대한민국을 각인 시킬 수 있는 계기가 되기를 기대한다.
